Mitsch-Barden Residence

Our clients, a young San Francisco couple living in Cole Valley, asked us to modify their three-bedroom, Arts and Crafts home to open out to a beautiful backyard garden.

The primary challenge was to preserve the elegant scale and detail of the circa 1910 rooms. To this end, we opened the spaces to each other: kitchen into dining room and dining room onto garden. In place of walls, a thick curtain was employed — an element that could be used to create discrete spaces or be pulled back to form a single airy room looking out at the garden.

The Mitsch-Barden Residence was featured in the January 2003 issue of Sunset Magazine.
